As the majority of countries, places are locked down due to the Corona Virus pandemic, there are still good things to do staying at home. Besides all those good stuff you can do to enjoy your isolation, movies and series are one of the options you can use to get out of boredom.
In the world of numerous genres of movies, I have created a shortlist of Movies related to Pandemic, outbreaks, virus and so, mostly related to the situation the world is in. And don’t panic with storylines and horrors of the movies as all of them are fictional, however, some facts reflect these situations.
IMDB Rating: 6.7/10 Contagion comes closest to describe the situation. Released in 2011, the movie concerns the spread of a virus transmitted by respiratory droplets and fomites attempts by medical researchers and public health officials to identify and contain the disease, the loss of social order in a pandemic, and the introduction of a vaccine to halt its spread. Directed by Steven Soderbergh, its ensemble cast includes Kate Winslet, Marion Cotillard, Jude Law, Gwyneth Paltrow, Matt Damon, Laurence Fishburne, Bryan Cranston, Jennifer Ehle, and Sanaa Lathan. Contagion is a more realistic demonstration of the situation the current world could face and way disease gets transmitted. As of the present situation as the Corona Virus outbreak took place the movie has become once again one of the most viewed movies of this genre from early 2020.
IMDB Rating: 6.6/10 A classic hit from 1995, Outbreak tells a story when a deadly new virus, carried by a monkey host from the African rain forest, starts infecting the entire population, a handful of scientists struggle to find a cure. Outbreak’s plot speculates how far military and civilian agencies might go to contain the spread of a deadly, contagious disease. Compared to Contagion, this movie is more dramatic. The film focuses on an outbreak of a fictional Ebola-like Motaba virus, in Zaire and later in a small town in the United States. It is primarily set in the United States Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the fictional town of Cedar Creek, California.
28 Days Later (2002)
IMDB Rating: 7.6/10 28 Days Later is a 2002 British post-apocalyptic horror film directed by Danny Boyle. The plot depicts the breakdown of society following the accidental release of a highly contagious virus and focuses upon the struggle of four survivors to cope with the destruction of the life they once knew. Unlike the other two from the top this is a zombie movie. The film received critical acclaim. Many praised the performances, screenplay, atmosphere, and soundtrack. It was followed by a 2007 sequel, 28 Weeks Later, a graphic novel titled 28 Days Later: The Aftermath, which expands on the timeline of the outbreak, and a 2009 comic book series titled 28 Days Later. In 2017 a poll of 150 actors, directors, writers, producers, and critics for Time Out magazine ranked it the 97th best British film ever.
I Am Legend (2007)
IMDB Rating: 7.2/10 Released in 2007, I Am Legend was a massive hit with total box office collection about $600M. American post-apocalyptic thriller film based on the 1954 novel of the same name by Richard Matheson. Directed by Francis Lawrence, the film stars Will Smith as US Army virologist Robert Neville where he is the last human survivor of a plague in the whole of New York. He attempts to find a way to reverse the effects of the man-made virus by using his own immune blood. One of my personal favorites.
12 Monkeys (1995)
IMDB Rating: 8/10 Inspired by Chris Marker’s 1962 short film La Jetée, 12 Monkeys is a 1995 American science fiction film directed by Terry Gilliam. The plot of the movie is based on using time travel to prevent a deadly virus, released in the year 1996 which wipes out almost all of humanity; forcing survivors to live underground. A group known as the Army of the Twelve Monkeys is believed to have released the virus. In 2035, a prisoner living in a subterranean compound beneath the ruins of Philadelphia. He is selected to be trained and sent back in time to find the original virus, in order to help scientists develop a cure. Meanwhile, Cole is troubled by recurring dreams involving a foot chase and shooting at an airport. 12 Monkeys studies the subjective nature of memories and their effect on perceptions of reality. Examples of false memories include Cole’s recollection of the airport shooting, altered each time he has the dream, and a “mentally divergent” man at the asylum who has false memories. Well, we wish if we had the technology of time travel like in the movie, we could’ve stopped Pandemic, right? or even stopped the world war. or we could’ve made the worst of everything, destroy the world, well who knows ;).
Train to Busan (2016)
Train to Busan is a 2016 South Korean action horror film directed by Yeon Sang-ho and starring Gong Yoo, Jung Yu-mi, and Ma Dong-seok. The film mostly takes place on a train to Busan as a zombie apocalypse suddenly breaks out in the country and threatens the safety of the passengers.
World War Z (2013)
IMDB Rating: 7/10 World War Z is a 2013 American apocalyptic action horror film directed by Marc Forster. It is based on the 2006 novel of the same name by Max Brooks. Starring Brad Pitt on the main role, the movie was a massive hit, and a sequel of the movie is already in progress. Gerry (Played by Brad Pitt), a former United Nations employee, unexpectedly finds himself in a race against time as he investigates a threatening virus that turns humans into zombies. Traversing the world in a race against time to stop a zombie pandemic that is toppling armies and governments and threatens to destroy humanity itself.
Resident Evil (2002)
IMDB Rating: 6.7/10 Resident Evil is a science fiction horror film written and directed by Paul W. S. Anderson Starring Milla Jovovich and Michelle Rodriguez. It is the first installment in the Resident Evil film series, which is based on the Capcom survival horror video game series Resident Evil. A special military unit fights a powerful, out-of-control supercomputer and hundreds of scientists who have mutated into flesh-eating creatures after a laboratory accident. The film follows amnesiac heroine Alice and a band of Umbrella Corporation commandos as they attempt to contain the outbreak of the T-virus at a secret underground facility. The film received mixed reviews from critics and was a box office success, grossing more than $100 million worldwide. The movie was followed by five other sequels. In my personal opinion the best are the first two installments. Though it is more of a zombie and action-packed the scene about ways the virus spreads and the speed it takes to spread is really something thrilling viewers will find. As sequels go on, there are fewer humans and more zombies with more mutated powerful villains and animals.
So, these are my best lists among the movies I have watched. Maybe I make one for series or add more titles here. As for now enjoy the list blog and do watch these recommendations staying at home.
